Have you crossed off climbing a bridge together from your date ideas bucketlist?
Reach new heights in your relationship by climbing a bridge together – not just any bridge – but the iconic Story Bridge.
It offers a unique perspective of the stunning city skyline and its surroundings.
We’ve wanted to do the Story Bridge climb for ages but saved it for a special occasion as a bit more expensive than the average date until we saw the experience on sale! The price was irresistible, so we wouldn’t put it off any longer!
The booking process was easy. When we arrived, we put our things (handbag, car keys etc) into a locker, sat in the waiting area where the safety briefing took place, and changed into climber suits that were provided. We were tested for alcohol consumption and double-checked to ensure we had nothing on us that could potentially fall during our climb, such as a mobile phone or bangle. The guide took photos and was happy to take photos any time we asked.
We walked to the bridge’s entrance, just a short walk down the road. We then climbed about ten sets of standard stairs – we could take our time. At the next stop – there was a water fountain where we could have a quick drink before climbing the bridge.
Our guide attached our safety gear to cables on the bridge.
Looking up to where we were climbing to, it looked like a steep rollercoaster track, making my heart race. As we climbed higher – the steps became slightly steeper. We walked at a comfortable pace and it was easy to do.
About halfway up to the highest point of the bridge, one of the members in our group, who has a fear of heights, asked not to continue with the climb. If you suspect your fear of heights might kick in, it’s a good idea to be the last person walking in line with the group – as he was in the back of the queue, he could get down faster, and we could wait where we were with the full view of the city while the guide took him down to the street and let him out safely. If he had walked in the front of the line, we would all have had to climb down to get him back to safety because we were all linked to a cable. It was good to see that there was the option to discontinue if needed. While my husband was fine – part of me wasn’t sure I would make it all the way, but I managed to push through and enjoy this experience of a lifetime despite now and again feeling a surprising fear of heights. I was fine as long as we kept moving and I didn’t look down during those times. About halfway through the experience, I got more used to it and could fully relax and take it all in!
Everyone else had no problem enjoying the adventurous climb from the get-go!
At the top of the bridge is a flat platform where we rested for a bit and listened to some history about the bridge while taking in the spectacular views. Our guide also pointed out some key landmarks that formed part of the view and took photos to capture the memories we made there. As we made our way down, we could even touch the bridge lights, which I had never dreamed of doing! We’ll never look at the bridge the same again.
We were blessed with the perfect weather – the fresh air and city views, like nowhere else, felt exhilarating. What an incredible, unique and adventurous date night it was! We did it – we did the Story Bridge climb – and we did it together! Another fantastic first for us as a couple that we highly recommend!
The experience is around 1 to 2 hours – depending on how many photos they take, how big the group is etc.
We went in April and had the perfect weather. We felt pretty hot climbing all those stairs in the full-body suits. We imagine climbing the bridge during the day would be very hot – likely uncomfortable – even if you are wearing shorts under it.
We recommend booking a time slot that includes the sunset – that would be ideal – but we loved the session after too, where the sun had just set, and the city lights created a stunning view.
Our session was booked for 5.40 pm – we thought we could catch more of the sunset but didn’t factor in the time it takes to get through the safety briefing and suiting up. The tour guide is very good at picking out a suit size for you – the suits come in different sizes.
There are some free parking spots outside the building, and if they are taken, there are some paid parking spots across the road which were free when we were there. It helped that we were there on a Tuesday night – we imagine it would be busier on a weekend which might make it harder to find a car park.
You can wear your glasses during the climb – you will be given a device for attaching it to your suit so it doesn’t risk falling.
