As a gift for Mother’s Day, my daughter treated my husband and me to vouchers for a romantic Champagne Breakfast in the Sky experience with Sky Events. I couldn’t believe that soon, we’d be having breakfast on a table suspended at a height of up to 60 meters by crane!
We were stunned the thought as we didn’t even know such a thing existed until now. Many of my friends were excited for us as they had also never heard of or experienced it.
When the day finally arrived, it was the 1st of June – around the start of winter in South Africa. I wasn’t sure how I felt about having an outdoor experience in the morning of a winters day, but that didn’t stop us! Hubby and I dressed warm – wearing sweaters, denim jeans, socks, and leather jackets to keep the cold out.
We arrived a bit earlier as we didn’t want to be late and still had time for a coffee at the Higher Ground Restaurant on the premisis of St Stithians College in Bryanston which is also the meeting place of the experience.
There were some people having breakfast up in the sky already before 9. When their table came down, it was our turn to get on board!
We handed our vouchers to one of the staff members, signed an indemnity form, and stood in line to be seated. The table is a rectangle shape with three seats on the each of the short ends and eight seats along each of the longer sides.
We were fastened to our seats with three-point safety belts. Once the safety checks were completed, we were lifted slowly into the sky. The table around us was full of people that were as excited as we were. Some were a little nervous too, of course, considering it’s so high! One of the ladies was more afraid of heights than she realized and lost her appetite a little at the start.
If anyone felt too uncomfortable to enjoy the experience due to fear of heights, they just needed to let the staff know who would then descend the table for them to get off. Fortunately, nobody felt the need to put an end to their experience.
The table was only brought to the ground once in our entire 45 min experience to pick up some people that had arrived late.
There were three staff members on the ride with us – a chef, waiter, and entertainer who pointed out some of the landmarks visible in the incredible view before us. It felt like we could see the whole of Johannesburg when we were up in the air. It was just amazing – every minute, we could spot something else that we didn’t notice in the landscape before.
We didn’t feel cold or uncomfortable. It was magnificent being up there, it felt like we were away from the daily grind of life, and not far into the experience, I could feel I was able to relax completely. I even enjoyed swinging my feet around! Some people were brave enough to set their chairs to a laying down position! We didn’t feel that brave 😀
I kept my phone on the table, so it was easy to take plenty of pictures. The staff members were also very kind and willing to take photos for us with my phone.
At some point, the table rotated so that everyone could experience all sides of the 360 degree view. It was a nice touch in case anyone felt someone had a better view than they did to start with.
The champagne flowed, and the breakfast was delicious. It included a wrap filled with bacon, eggs, and mushrooms with tomato relish, fruit, muffins, muesli, and yogurt.
Hubby and I agreed it would be a great place to propose! It’s a beautiful experience to share with your partner for the first time, and the views are just breathtaking. Sometimes we didn’t even need to talk – we were taking in these magical moments together. A lot of the time, it felt like it was just the two of us on cloud 9!
We feel this is one of the best couples activities in Johannesburg and well worth the spend. We highly recommend it for any special occasion such as Valentine’s Day, a proposal or as an anniversary or birthday celebration. It certainly beats any of the romantic restaurants in Johannesburg with a view that we’ve been to.
