The must-visit Rainbow Mountain is a day trip from Cusco, Peru. Its famous striped colors, vibrant in the sunshine, are largely due to weathering and mineral deposits. Multiple companies run tours that can be booked online or when you arrive in Cusco.
Our Rainbow Mountain Peru Experience
We paid $30 to do the tour with Rainbow Mountain Travels which included hotel pickup and drop off, transport to and from the mountain, guided tour (but they are very flexible if people want to carry on ahead) plus breakfast and lunch! Incredible value for money.
Despite the hike itself only taking around 3-4hrs (rtn), the day is very long. Tour companies will pick you up from Cusco at around 3am, and drop you off around 3pm. However, don’t let this put you off!
The hike itself has stunning mountainous views all the way through and the journey there has beautiful Peruvian countryside views.
More Mountains in Peru you shouldn’t miss!
Rainbow Mountain (as featured in the previous post) is simply stunning but make sure you check out Red Valley too! It’s an extra 20mins hike from Rainbow Mountain and is often forgotten about so there are very little crowds in comparison!
The only thing to bear in mind is the altitude. The hike starts at 4600m and rises to 5200m is not something to be taken lightly. Ensure you have time to acclimatize in Peru before taking on this trip and while doing the hike, take it easy and drink plenty of water!
