Out of many places we’ve been fortunate to travel to together, my top romantic vacation so far was definitely our honeymoon in Maldives.
Why we recommend staying at Vilamendhoo Island Resort
I spent a very long time narrowing down exactly which resort I wanted to visit: not too big, not too small, not too commercial, not too remote. There are plenty of chain resorts on bigger islands, but I didn’t want any nightlife or party noise. In the end, I couldn’t be happier with our particular choice of Vilamendhoo Island Resort.
Staying in this smaller resort felt like we had the whole island to ourselves.
For vague reference, our all-inclusive room was less than USD 1000 per night in high season – we were there in the first week of January.
Our Maldives Overwater Bungalow Experience
We spent a week in one of those overwater bungalows you always see on Instagram. Definitely save up extra to splurge on the overwater bungalows, at least for one night. You won’t regret it – it will be everything you dream, if you fantasize about visiting Maldives one day.
Get to Know the Locals
Don’t miss the experience of meeting and learning from locals outside of their jobs. Visit a non-resort island; get a tour of schools and hospitals; ask about government and banking. We were fascinated by everything we learnt about Maldives this way. The Maldivians are lovely, disciplined, relaxed people.
Visiting Maldives Doesn’t Have to be Expensive
Contrary to popular belief, you can find plenty of lodging in Maldives as cheap as $20USD/night. Of course that would be more of a local Airbnb than a bungalow on the Indian Ocean, but I wouldn’t skip this dreamy country just because you can’t find a resort in your budget.
