We recommend hiking to the incredibly beautiful Sorapis Lake, which can be very busy at times.
We knew camping is not allowed at Sorapis Lake; however we spoke to a local who told us “bivacco” (the Italian word for camping) is allowed if you arrive at the top of the mountain before sunset, set up the tent, sleep there for the night and go at sunrise. This also means that you avoid busy times!
Couples… it was like being on another planet. Once everyone was gone there were only the two of us and two photographers. The colour of the lake is hypnotising and I think it’s even more magical at sunset and sunrise. We prepared an “aperitivo” (the Italian word for appetizer), had a glass of wine then started cooking our dinner: gnocchi with ricotta and truffle sauce. When the sun went down, we went into our very own five star hotel : our tent!
Tips: We set our alarm to wake us up in the middle of the night to look at the Milky Way and the stars… I guarantee you, you’ve never seen the sky like that… it was also very romantic and we were so happy and excited we couldn’t even go back to sleep.
What we packed: tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, flashlights, small camping table, little stove, small pot, cutlery, water bottles, food, biodegradable soap and recycling bags. Make sure you bring heavy clothes for the night and good hiking shoes as the hike to get to the lake is not easy at all times.
Unfortunately you can not swim in the lake as it is protected by the UNESCO.
