Gozsdu Udvar is a complex comprising of seven derelict buildings and courtyards, repurposed into an entertainment hub offering an eclectic blend of entertainment, gastronomy and culture. It is a UNESCO heritage symbolic of the ruin bars that are found all over Budapest. Ruin bars are drinking joints unique to Budapest, where decrepit buildings are transformed into offbeat taverns.

Besides ruin bars and restaurants, many forms of art and cultural entertainment are also found in Gozsdu Udvar. If you head to Gozsdu Udvar on Fridays or weekends, you can shop for many thrift bargains in its weekend market! Arts and cultural programs are also held here regularly, spanning from salsa programs to art bazaars. Unsurprisingly, this compound is crowded with people, but it only adds to the pulsing vigour of the place.

It is best to head to Gozsdu Udvar during dusk, when you can fully admire the colourful graffiti giving character to the restaurants and pubs, and see the fairy lights come to life when the sun sets. The dazzling fairy lights definitely add to the romantic ambience in the area, and makes it the perfect venue for a romantic dinner for two.

There are a staggering variety of restaurants and pubs to choose from, and we just picked a random restaurant that attracted us with it whimsical interior, Spíler Original. We were pleasantly surprised by its delectable food, and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We ordered mangalica sausage and mangalica ham pizza, as mangalica pork is a Budapest specialty. Mangalica pork is indeed superior to most pork, its meat is tender and succulent, and it does not reek of the pungent pork taste that some pork do.

So if you ever visit Budapest, you must not miss Gozsdu Udvar, the epitome of all ruin bars! This beautiful one-of-a-kind quarter will make your time together in Budapest even more unforgettable!
