“Dyen Sabai is a beautiful restaurant in Luang Prabang, Laos. Visiting was one of the most romantic experiences I’ve ever had, even though it was with a man I’d met just earlier that afternoon on a boat trip! It’s also a romantic experience with a difference — slightly unusual and rough around the edges (and will fit almost every budget!), rather than stiff fine dining.
To reach Dyen Sabai from the centre of Luang Prabang’s old town, you have to cross a bridge over the river. This isn’t just any bridge though — it’s a bamboo wooden bridge that sways under your feet as you walk, and it’s lit up with fairy lights so that in the dark it looks absolutely magical as shown in the photo (it’s also a tiny bit scary). Be aware that you have to pay a toll to cross this private bridge, but the cost is tiny (around £0.50).
Dyen Sabai has a relaxed, boho, buzzy athmosphere. You sit on colourful cushions on the ground, protected by a rustic woven bamboo roof.

Tips for visitors:
– Make sure you get there early or book ahead to get a table with a view of the river, the lit-up bridge and Luang Prabang’s Mount Phousi
– Definitely order the Laos fondue. This involves barbecuing meat (or a vegetarian alternative) and dipping ingredients into an absolutely delicious soup to cook. It really adds to the experience making part of the dish yourself!
Why it’s so romantic:
– The incredible bridge across the river to get there
– Beautiful rustic setting
– Making an Asian fondue together is a really fun bonding experience”
