The following are stories of real-life couples that took part in the #DateNightatHomeChallenge which started in the Romantic Explorers Facebook Group. The challenge hopes to inspire more romance in this time of isolation and beyond.

The idea came about when hubby and I set up a little romantic escape for ourselves in our backyard to celebrate Easter. We did it very cheaply with just a few items we had around the house, a teepee I got for a bargain on Facebook Marketplace, and some $10 fairy lights from Bunnings. We loved the fresh air, change of scenery, and especially seeing the stars come out at night. Our music tracks included our wedding song.
Hoping it would inspire others to do something romantic at home too, we shared it in the Romantic Explorers Facebook group and started the challenge!
We’ve been amazed at the stunning efforts by other couples in the Romantic Explorers Facebook and Instagram communities that followed. Here are some of their incredible stories:

“Marilize and I had our date night at home, and we made everything from things we had at home, even the teepee tent. It was romantic and just amazing!”
They even made a little romantic video with sparkles and romantic music to capture the moment. They are beaming of happiness and love in their video, and they managed to do it all spending very little.

“Well, I was supposed to be in Cancun right now to celebrate my 30th birthday and check out the last Modern Wonder of the World we have left to see (Chitzén Itzá), but the universe had other plans. Luckily, my boyfriend brought Mexico to us by setting up our pop-up camper on our driveway full of balloons, getting a little pool to dip our feet in, seeing up a hammock, making chilaquiles, tacos, shrimp cocktail and a little day drinking.”
How amazing is it that Carlos took the initiative and put in the effort to recreate a taste of Mexico for her birthday at home?

“So as parents of five kids aged five months – 13 yrs finding time for ‘date nights’ & ‘private time’ is very rare… But sometimes the stars do align. Last night all five were with babysitters or their mum/dad, so we finally got to have an ‘iso-date.’
To set the mood, I sent my partner a TRUTH or DARE question on Friday and asked him to choose. He chose DARE, so his challenge was to create/come up with a cheap but romantic activity for us to do on Saturday… We were going to go to a private beach he found, but it rained, so he organized a picnic at our ‘special place’ in the forestry behind a dam just up the road. While out we talked about things we missed and agreed it was camping… So… When we got home I sent him for a quick visit to his mates and pulled out the tent, candles, and fairy lights! Courtesy of the rain, it had to go up inside! But the result was awesome.
I cooked up one of our favorite meals (seared venison with Mediterranean vege stack) and printed off some more TRUTH or DARE cards… Let’s just say we had a great night and lots of fun playing games, watching movies and listening to tunes.”
Good on this couple for finding the time and energy to do something romantic together at a time when it’s easy to use our busy lives as an excuse not to make an effort.

“I took the wife out on an isolation date ??. Picked her up at 6pm from the bedroom and took her outside to the balcony ???. ” We love his wife’s reaction too: “It’s so easy to take someone you see every day for granted. Tonight you planned the post perfect ‘isolation’ dinner date. As we sat there laughing and enjoying each other’s company, I took a moment to really appreciate you … I really did hit the jackpot with you.”

“So last weekend was our First wedding Anniversary. Of course, I had to get creative being in isolation in an apartment! Far from the beautiful restaurant and stay by the water I had planned for us…. and a little underwhelming, I didn’t do too badly with what we had. Luckily a couple of weeks ago, I managed to order some seafood to pick up. So we had breakfast of French toast on the balcony at the ‘Isolation cafe.’ Lunch of smoked salmon, Camembert and tiger prawns at the ‘Isolation Anniversary Cafe’. Lastly, after decorating the balcony in the late afternoon with fairy lights from our wedding, we donned our wedding outfits and had dinner at the Covid-19 High-End Restaurant with the last bottle of Moët from our wedding!”
How adorable are those heart-shaped french toasties? Theirs looks like the perfect romantic dinner for seafood lovers and the fairy lights makes the setup look like a scene from a fairytale.

“When your son asks for help to surprise his girlfriend for their six month anniversary … staying at home may mean no fancy dinner out, but who says you can’t have a beautiful dinner in?”
Such creativity in this beautiful fort!

“We definitely didn’t plan to spend our five year (half a decade) wedding anniversary underneath our washing line ??, but here we are ???!!”
Haha, if this couple can set up such a romantic date idea with only a washing line, what excuse does any couple have not to give it a go!?
